Market Snapshot

South Australian prices lead NEM as regional averages climb above ninety dollars

Regional average prices ranged from 73.90 dollars in Queensland to 114.70 dollars in South Australia, with New South Wales and Victoria both exceeding 99 dollars. Queensland was the only region to record negative pricing intervals, while South Australia and Victoria saw maximum prices reach 227.30 and 190.50 dollars respectively.

Total energy consumption was highest in New South Wales at 418.7 gigawatt hours, followed by Victoria at 319.1 gigawatt hours. Evening demand peaks occurred between 17:55 and 19:55 across the mainland, coinciding with a period of lower renewable availability after the 63 percent instantaneous peak at 12:20.

Coal remained the primary generation source at 54.1 percent, while wind and solar combined for 28.2 percent of the daily energy. Batteries contributed 21,649 megawatt hours of discharge, representing 3.1 percent of the total generation mix for the day.

Frequency control ancillary services costs remained low, with the highest single service cost being 31,906 dollars for New South Wales Raise Regulation. Total emissions fell by 2.8 percent compared to the same day last week, reaching 381,548 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

Today · Queensland is forecast to reach a peak pre-dispatch price of 319.04 dollars at 19:30 this evening.

Why it matters · The daily average of 91.10 dollars sits above the seven-day average of 85.71 dollars, reversing a recent downward trend observed over the previous four days. This price lift occurred despite a 2.8 percent reduction in emissions, as battery discharge and gas generation filled gaps during the evening demand peaks.
